New Delhi: Bajrang Punia is set to be awarded the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award 2019 — the country’s most potent sporting honour.
Speaking to IANS, specialists in the know of communities stated that Punia would be rewarded with the award for his like showing in the field of wrestling and his participation in making laurels to the country.
Punia, along with Vinesh Phogat, was suggested by the WFI for the prestigious award.
Bajrang Punia recently retained his title at the Tbilisi Grand Prix as he got the gold medal by controlling over Iran’s Peiman Bibyani in the 65kg final of the men’s freestyle competition.
The current number 1- wrestler Punia marked his authority in the Asian circuit after he got the Asian Wrestling Championships in Xi’an, China.
Punia owned last year won the gold medal in the 65-kg freestyle wrestling event at the Asian Games continued in Jakarta. He took Japanese fighter Takatani Daichi 11-8.
Before that, he should also win the gold medal in the equivalent category at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. He defeated Kane Charig of Wales by Technical Superiority to hold the gold.
Last year, Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli and weightlifter Mirabai Chanu were awarded the Khel Ratna Award.
The 1st recipient of the award was Chess Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand, who was honoured for his performance in the year 1991-92.
